March 16th 2012 the mail man brought our letter from Salt Lake City. It was our mission call that we had been waiting for since our papers went in Feb 20th. I brought in the mail and called to Rand that the letter was here. He came right down and I gave him the letter. He opened it and handed it back to me. I took out the letter and handed it back to him. We were both pretty nervous. He started reading the letter then we read it together.
Where in the world is Kampala Uganda? I was thinking it was in South America some where not being very good with geography. Rand laughed and said it was in Africa. Where in Africa is Uganda? Neither of us knew. There was a map of what the Ugandan mission included: Ethiopia, Sudan, Rwanda, what Rwanda? I've read a couple books about the genocide there and they have people there that are members? Wow.
There were a couple other tiny countries listed. We will be surrounded by Kenya and the Congo to name the ones that I can remember. Mom and Dad were in Nigeria almost 20 years ago. We are somewhat on the same level of the equator but they were in North West Africa and we will be in South East Africa. No close temple yet for the Ugandan saints, lucky Nigeria.
At first we were told we would be Humanitarian missionaries over employment and the Perpetual Education Fund. Since our original call our mission has been moved up from May 21st to enter the mission home to May 14th. Instead of two humanitarian areas we will be over only the PEF so we'll be at the MTC for just two weeks then head to Uganda.
The mission presidents wife said that her husband was planning to send us to Jinja, about 100 miles from the capital, Kampala. She said they are much in need of the PEF service there. The PEF provides money for education to deserving members who qualify. Once they get the education they will make better money to provide for their families and turn around and pay back the PEF fund so that other deserving members can get their education. I remember when the Prophet announced this fund. It was exciting to me that the church would have a program in place similar to the Perpetual immigration fund that helped early members without the means, come to Salt Lake City as pioneers join with the Saints.
This is going to be really an exciting time for us but I'm already homesick. We will really miss our family & friends so much.
I've been worrying about driving like the British on the wrong side of the street with the driver sitting on the wrong side of the car. Years ago while in England I saw how they were driving all wrong and I had to not look because it felt so wrong. Can we really learn to drive like that? Since we'll be on the Lord's errand I've decided not to think about that. A friend at DUP told me how she learned and already I'm learning that we'll be just fine.

Thanks for letting us know the story of receiving your missionary call letter. We are so excited to hear about your wonderful adventures.
Of course the kids and grand kids perspective is left out of mom's post. We are so proud and thrilled that mom and dad are making this decision to go. There are so many excuses they could have used to delay submitting their mission papers. How cool it is to have parents that put excuses behind them and seek out the will of the Lord!! We love you mom and dad and are glad we get to hang out with you a bit longer before you head out for this amazing adventure.
Love your blog. You are so creative and informative. Thanks for sharing.
